Chandrasekhar Rao, Chief Minister of the newly-carved Telangana state, has denied terming Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a fascist. KCR clarified that he had criticised the central government on receiving a letter from the Union home ministry, proposing special powers to Telangana governor for maintaining law and order in Hyderabad. He had only termed the move as a fascist action as the Constitution needs to be amended to give special powers to the governor. * MNS chief Raj Thackeray has defended Prime Minister Narendra Modi, advising people to give him some time to perform, after receiving a massive mandate in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. He also clarified that his certain comments about Modi a few weeks ago were distorted by the media. * The state finance ministers (FMs) have been left a disappointed lot after the Empowered Committee’s proposal to take them to China and Russia on a 16-day tour to study the structure of Goods and Services Tax (GST) has put been on hold by the Narendra Modi government. Scheduled to take place between August 20 and September 4, this was the seventh overseas visit planned by since 2006. Earlier, the Empowered Committee has undertaken six visits to several countries including England, Canada, Italy, Australia, France, Singapore, Brazil, Belgium, Spain, Luxembourg, Japan and South Africa. Significantly, the Modi government has imposed restrictions on overseas visits by officials and senior government functionaries. The GST, when introduced, will merge together indirect taxes like excise duty and service tax at the central level and VAT on the states front, besides local levies. The previous UPA government had brought in the Constitutional Amendment Bill in 2011 to pave way for rolling out GST. * The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojna, a scheme to financially empower the poor, announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his Independence Speech has an interesting origin. Its name was chosen through a contest on MyGov website launched by Prime Minister Modi last month to enable common people to share their thoughts and ideas.More than 6,000 entries were scrutinised to arrive at the appropriate name for the financial inclusion scheme. An eminent jury shortlisted the entries from which Jan Dhan was selected. Final logo and tagline of the scheme will be announced soon, the MyGov website said. A technology-driven medium, MyGov provides people an opportunity to contribute towards good governance. * Taking a cue from PM’s exhortation to the corporate sector to give priority to building toilets in schools as part of the CSR (corporate social responsibility) initiatives, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has pledged Rs 100 crore towards financing hygienic sanitation facilities for girl students across 10,000 schools. Addressing the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort, Mod had said: There should be a toilet in all the schools of our country. A separate toilet for girls...it is only then our girls will not have to quit schools.
