Before the arrival of the smiling assassin today at Newcastle West (Sparke Helmore Building, Honeysuckle Drive, Thursday 4 Dec 2014), Mike Bairds minder from the NSW Police came over and read us the Riot Act. I think he thought we were a bunch of kiddies from the local schoolyard. The reality was a number of former councillors and politicians were in the crowd, and this was always going to be a peaceful protest where we wanted the Premier to listen to our very valid concerns. I suppose its a reasonable assumption that given all the bully-boy tactics that have been used by the politicians on Novocastrians, these tactics might be used by the crowd. Thats their paranoid mindset anyway. Weve punched you in the face by ripping out the rail, so please dont punch Baird in the face as retaliation. This assumes that we are using the same tactics as them. NO. We simply want to take Baird up on his frequent promises to all of us that hell consult widely and take into account the views of the entire community - residents and visitors - not just developers! We are, however, far better than that, even if they arent. Heres some of the dialogue from Bairds minder. The oft-quoted plea is that the residents of the Hunter deserve better. Yep, we deserve better than being treated so condescendingly like this: Hes happy, when he gets here to come over and have a chat to you.
