2014 the year that went a bit Bizerk ! An EP review that started on a train journey to Edinburgh in June time. Me and the lovely Susan Soutar board the Edinburgh bound express train to the capital to go and see the wonderful Mickey 9s playing in the Liquid Rooms. When we board the train its kinda quiet but i sit down at a seat with a table because you simply cannot go to Edinburgh for a gig without a beer. As the train pulls away the lovely young man sitting at the table directly opposite us pulls out his beer and offers us a can (it would be rude not to). Turns out the young man was Crazy Steven Morrison drummer with the View on his way to play a gig in Shetland. We talked about festivals and gigs, and when we said we were going to Belladrum, Mo said Oh, I think weve just been booked as the special guests for that. We pointed out that Bella usually has a secret guest. Ooops, said Mo. Several cans later we hug, wish him all the best and depart the train. The gig in Liquid Rooms was a great night, with The Victorian Trout Conspiracy headlining as it was the launch of their new EP. In the queue on the way in we bump into Jamie Keir of Jamie & Shoony fame, and have a chat about independence as one did back on the day. The Mickey 9s were brilliant as where the Victorian Trout Conspiracy, but it was a band who I had heard loads about but never seen - Hector Bizerk - that really knocked us for 6 and made us go investigate further. Anyways a few Hector gigs and festivals later the Soutar clan rock up to our annual Belladrum pilgrimage with No2 son and his friends and all our gang, and convince all of them plus a fair few strangers that the headline band to watch that weekend will not be the guys on the main stage, but Hector Bizerk in a wee tent. Met Crazy Mo along the way again and when we turned round halfway through the Hector set, felt cool as feck seeing EVERYONE there, dancing and singing and having the best time ever. So anyway (after another fantastic set from Hector and the Mickey 9s at Doune the Rabbit Hole), on to Christmas day and the Fish That Never Swam ep, Hector Bizerks latest. We listen to it several times, and just love it, they are getting better and better. But surely the final say must come from my mum, who declares that she hates the Eels and the Super Furry Animals, but likes Hector, cause you can hear what hes saying. She seemed to like Audreys beats too if her nodding head was anything to go by. Shell be 71 in a few days time. To summarise, I love Hector, Susan loves Hector, my son and my sons friends love Hector, my mum loves Hector. So go buy it, it must be good.
