21st October - goodbye - Ruby Tuesday- feast of St Ursula - worth a mention on two counts - one, because it is one of my sisters middle names - the one the used to hated - and two , because according to a legend that appeared in the tenth century, Ursula was the daughter of a Christian king in Britain and was granted a three year postponement of a marriage she did not wish to make to a pagan prince. The legend continues - with ten ladies in waiting, each attended by a thousand maidens, she embarked on a voyage across the North sea, sailed up the Rhine to Basle, Switzerland, and then went to Rome. On their way back, they were all massacred by pagan Huns at Cologne in about 451 when Ursula refused to marry their chieftain. My day somewhat less exciting on all levels than St Ursulas - went to look a care homes for Liam. Theres nothing more soulless imagined on this earth than those holding areas for the last plane leaving lifes airport wherever bound. They do the physical care bit brilliantly but they somehow lack warmth. So, I did fish and chips with Richard as means of restoring my drooping He had his own adventure in bushey - out watford way - last night. He did not get in until late and the prize was not all it was meant to be. Still weve enough framed pictures in this house to want or need another. Today he conquered charity shops with his mum and brought home tribute in the form of more opera cds. I see Mr Pistorius was sentenced and then there was a lot of talk so I turned down the volume on the TV and read - or rather started my book on Cashel. Its odd how the terms used by this historian echo my rather fanciful novels on the subject. more thesis today and more Mary Tudor by Mr Edwards tomorrow.I have cakes to bake and meals to prepare - it will be a busy few days. Philip is taking me to see La Fanciulla del West. It is my very favourite Puccini - bits of it bring tears to my jaundiced eyes but as a work it is more Turandot than Butterfly. Theres a fabulous version by Del monaco and Elena Steber from 1954 - a live version that contains the sixteen very difficult compasses of high range in duet Eternamente in stesi which are NEVER sung because theyre to high - sheer brilliance. Florence, 1954 - oh the glories that are youtube.... https://youtube/watch?v=AnjUf8Py1og
