23 die, 3000 houses damaged across Jammu: Government Flood Threat Looms Large As Rivers Flow Near Danger Mark ABHINAV VERMA / SUMIT BHARGAV SmallerDefaultLarger Jammu, Aug 16: Government Friday said that about 23 persons have died and around 3000 houses have suffered damages due to the flash floods and heavy rains, which continue to lash Jammu region, since last 3 days. “Twenty three persons died, 836 residential houses have suffered complete damage and 2161 others have been damaged partially across Jammu due to the rains and flash floods”, Divisional Commissioner Jammu Shantmanu informed a meeting, chaired by the Minister of State for Revenue, Relief and Rehabilitation, Aijaz Ahmed Khan, here today.The meeting was further informed that various roads have also been damaged and the livestock has been affected due to incessant rains for past few days in Jammu region. The meeting was convened to review the preparedness of all concerned departments in tackling the flood situation across the region. Speaking on the occasion, Khan exhorted upon the officers to be prompt and extra vigilant towards their services to deal with the situation arisen due to heavy rains and flash floods in the region. As per the reports reaching here the incessant rainfalls have created havoc across the region from past 3 days. Though water has started receding in most of the areas, officials said that the flood treat continues as more rain was expected tomorrow. As per Irrigation and Flood Control officials the water level in all the rivers Chenab, Tawi and Ujh has started receding as the rainfall stopped this afternoon. They said that the water level at present in Tawi River was 10, 7 feet blow danger mark. The water level had earlier reached at 17 feet forcing the administration to shift people from low lying areas. Similarly, in River Chenab was flowing at 29.4 feet. Earlier the water level had reached at 37 feet, 2 ft above danger mark. However Indian Metrological Department (IMD) officials forecasted heavy rainfall at isolated places during next 36 hour. District administration Kathua has issued flood warning asking people not to venture near the rivers and tributaries. Deputy commissioner, Kathua Jitendra Kumar Singh appealed the Public in general and inhabitants of Berail island, Naj and bhini rivers, jakhole, Chung, Ghatti, chabbe chack, khandwal, Korepunnu, Mai chack, Nanagal, Sherpur, Prithi chack, Badala and Keerian Gandial in particular not to venture near the rivers/ nallahs and also not to allow the cattle to enter into the river/nallahs in view of heavy rains and flash floods. Due to continuous rains, all the majors rivers and local nallahs of district Kathua are experiencing high discharge resulting in heavy floods, an official spokesman said. In Jammu rainfall exposed the poor construction and maintenance of Shri Maharaja Gulab Singh (SMGS) hospital, rainwater today entered new and old building forcing administration to lay polythene sheets on the roof to prevent water from entering children wards. There was chaos in the only maternity hospital in the region for last 48-hours as incessant rainfall in Jammu did not allow the administration to carry out any repair to plug the leakage. Water began dripping from roof on first floor of only maternity hospital and several rooms of doctors were affected by it. “Many of the people feared that roof may collapse and they were quite concerned about their dear ones admitted in different wards of the hospital”, a patient said. Deputy Medical Superintend, SMGSH, Dr Dara Singh said, “We have laid polythene sheets on the roof so that entry of water is prevented. At the moment we cannot carry out any major repair due to continuous rainfall, which may affect normal working in the hospital.” In Rajouri district more than 276 houses were damaged. Officials said that around 76 of the structures suffered total damage, while 200 others were partially damaged due to heavy rainfall in the district for past 3 days. Besides this about 100 domesticated animals have died and many got injured in the incidents of cattle shed collapse. District Commissioner Rajouri, Faqir Chand Bhagat confirmed the losses saying that the administration has geared up to provide immediate relief to the people. He added that many other important infrastructures like Floor Grinders (Chakis), Poultry Farm and other infrastructures raised on the river side have suffered damage due to flash floods. Bhagat further informed that administration is keeping a close vigil over the situation emerging after the heavy rainfall and police as well as army is also on alert to deal with the situation. As per an order issued here today by divisional administration a control room has been established to monitor the situation. The officials in the control room included Rakesh Kumar, Assistant Account Officer, Tilak Raj Sharma, Retd SO (Rlys), Brij Kumar, Girdawar, Sanjay Kumar, Sts Assistant, Pratap Singh, Jr Assistant, Pritam Chand, Jr Assistant, Ajit Singh, Jr Assistant, Pagbir Saini, Jr Assistant, Mohd Tazeem, Jr Assistant, Sham Lal, Despatch Rider, Om Parkash, Orderly and Uttam Singh, Orderly.
