(25/09/2014): ...Went along to the bARTer exhibition event at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead and had a really good afternoon there. As an artist, it makes sense that I enjoy going to see exhibitions in order to further my own research. However, I should point out that although I do like seeing shows by bigger names; I also equally enjoy seeing the creations by those who might not necessarily have the training, qualifications and status as the famous artists. People do not always have the same opportunities in life, which is why I feel very strongly about enabling access to the arts and promoting creativity as a tool for general wellbeing, so that everyone can benefit from these experiences. :-) For bARTer, individuals who have lived-experience of mental illness took part in an arts engagement project ran by the gallery and this was an exhibition of what they had created. I liked all the pieces in the show but my favourite was probably the animation piece, which I got the privilege to see on the big screen today. I hope lots of people go to see this exhibition because the participants in the project have done themselves proud. Positively, the show provides a platform for visitors to explore ideas and perceptions of mental health, whilst creating an opportunity for meaningful dialogue to be exchanged about the subject. The show runs 8 September – 19 October 2014 on Level 2.
