25 years ago today I was taking a miserable bus ride from Guangzhou to Yangshuo. My seat was right next to the engine, which was INSIDE this bus on a 95+ degree day. For twelve hours, with a couple of breaks, I endured the misery because I simply didnt know what else to do. It was the beginning of my 80 days around the world. All of us on the bus, mostly Caucasian westerners, had no idea of what was going on east of us. We arrived in Yangshuo late that night, after dark. I found a room (with mosquito netting, thankfully) and got a good sleep. The next morning I went to find breakfast in this adorable little town. On my way, I learned from my fellow travelers that students had been killed and that we were being instructed by our governments to leave the country for our own safety.
