26 years ago, I first picked up the alto saxophone. I was good at it. I was named outstanding beginner band student. I became section leader of my junior high school band by the time I was in 8th grade. I even probably would have gone to college for free if I had kept going. But, I quit because it wasn’t the cool thing to do. Probably the dumbest thing I have ever done. I sold my saxophone for $350, probably because I wanted some Guess Jeans, the new Michael Jordan shoes, and the latest MC Hammer album. Today, on my 37th birthday, my wonderful wife gave me the gift of music once again. I remember how to hold it. I remember most notes. I might even remember how to play some songs. 2 years ago, I was given music therapy with a guitar because I was told it would help rebuild motor and brain function. I have to imagine that playing a horn also builds lung capacity, a key issue that almost led to my demise. More importantly, I want my kids to know music. I want to play for them. I want to use it as a tool to help them develop. I have longed for music in my life. This is the best birthday present I have ever gotten. Ellen did not give me a saxophone. She gave our family music.
