27 Years Ago Today... 1987 Whittier Narrows Earthquake Date: October 1, 1987 Time: 07:42 AM Area: Whittier Narrows Magnitude: 5.9 Deaths: 8 Comments: This quake was personal as I was a freshman at Cal State Los Angeles on what I recall was my second day (in total) in college. A student, Lupe-Elias-Exposito, was killed when a piece of the south parking garage came down on her. I did not know Lupe on a personal level, but she was my group leader for freshman orientation during the summer of 1987 and was quite key in helping me and others adjust to college life. The area where she died was a well traveled path. Had this quake occurred just 20 minutes later, I estimate more students could have been injured or killed. Ruben Salazar Hall, a building on campus, was closed after the quake due to damage. During my four years on that campus, I never took a class there and the building opened a year after I graduated. -Chin Thammasaengsri To see visuals of this event, go here:
