#289 Pixr8 news: The Internets own boy - Late Reddit co-founder Aaron Swartz fighting story for free speech and data sharing freedom on Internet Aaron Swartz a most creative person and Reddit co-founder found dead on January 11, 2013 . Swartz who work for Internet privacy of people and stand against US govt. SOPA bill is one of the victim of unfair control by Government agencies. This story start from when US government introduced SOPA bill in 2011 by U.S. Representative Lamar S. Smith to expand the ability of U.S. law enforcement to combat online copyright infringement and included the requesting of court orders to bar advertising networks and payment facilities from conducting business with infringing websites, and search engines from linking to the websites, and court orders requiring Internet service providers to block access to the websites. Swartz a founder of various companies but most famous being as a co-founder of Reddit, later involved on civic awareness and activism work. He made a group called Demand Progress which specializing in petitions to help gain traction for legal movements against internet censorship and related subjects. Swartz group Demand Progress start protest against the new law SOPA using signature campaign and sharing their thoughts on events. In one of famous speech at the F2C:Freedom to Connect 2012 event in Washington, D.C in 2012 where Swartz speech was titled How We Stopped SOPA and he said: This bill shut down whole websites. Essentially, it stopped Americans from communicating entirely with certain groups.... I called all my friends, and we stayed up all night setting up a website for this new group, Demand Progress, with an online petition opposing this noxious bill. We [got] 300,000 signers. We met with the staff of members of Congress and pleaded with them.And then it passed unanimously. And then, suddenly, the process stopped. Senator Ron Wyden put a hold on the bill. He added, We won this fight because everyone made themselves the hero of their own story. Everyone took it as their job to save this crucial freedom. On January 6, 2011, Swartz was arrested by MIT police for breaking security and systematically downloading academic journal articles from JSTOR company. Later on federal court charged him with two counts of wire fraud and 11 violations of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, implementing penalty of $1 million in fines, 35 years in prison, asset forfeiture, restitution and supervised release. Swartz declined an offer of plea bargain under which he would serve six months in federal prison. On 11th Jan 2013, two days after a counter offer came from Swartz side which was rejected by opposite side, he was found dead in his Brooklyn, New York apartment, where he had hanged himself.
