(3 mins) If you think Scott Morrisons plans to send refugees to Cambodia, of all places, is a good idea, just what do the Cambodians think? Theyre not amused, and on 26 September when Morrison visited the country to sign the deal, and yesterday (Friday 17 October) there were large protests in the streets of Phnom Penh. Yesterday, the protests almost turned to riots. When the deal was being signed last month, at a no-expense spared event in Cambodia, with onlooking dignitaries and military generals, a waitress dropped the tray of champagne. Morrison had arrived twenty minutes late, and things didnt go so smoothly. After the event, with no precise details of the scheme announced by either country, Morrison took no questions, disappointing a myriad of waiting journalists. The deal will cost Australia $40million at least. If more refugees take up the offer to resettle in Cambodia, the country will be paid an extra $1million each as a bonus. The deal requires a guarantee from those refugees accepting it, that it must be voluntary and permanent. Only a handful of refugees have so far accepted the offer. Whether this money gets to the right places is doubtful, as corruption among politicians is rife in the country (same as Australia, I suppose). Cambodia is one of the poorest countries in the world, and the deal also requires that the refugees must settle in rural areas. They will be settled in the capital on arrival, but their movements are restricted until a permanent place in regional or rural Cambodia can be found for them. Sounds like a great deal for the Abbott government, but absolutely no-one else. Cambodians are upset because they are impoverished and claim the government has done nothing to help them, the Cambodian opposition is wary of where the funds will end up, human rights groups worldwide had loudly condemned the deal, and in Australia there is wide opposition to the inhuman dumping of our refugee problem on a country which doesnt have the resources to deal with their own problems. Please help spread the word on this, as its not getting a decent airing on mainstream media. Please SHARE.
