35 NEW ALLOTTEES EMERGE AT SECOND DRAW OF LAGOS HOMS …Only the best is good for the people of Lagos-Fashola With 200 new homes on the offer, the Second Draw under the Lagos Home ownership Mortgage Scheme was conducted in Lagos on Friday with the State Governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola (SAN) imploring those who have engaged with the process and have seen the transparency and efficiency to become ambassadors for the scheme. The Governor who spoke after the draws that took place at the BlueRoof Hall, LTV 8, Agidingbi, Ikeja and which produced another set of 35 successful allottees urged them to go out there and tell other people to do what they have done. He explained that a prospective allotee does not need to know anyone but just needs to engage with the website of the Lagos HOMS scheme, apply, show necessary records and hopefully become a winner at the next draw. “We have committed to providing a minimum of 200 homes every month. This is the second month that we have kept our promise. And as the Secretary of the board has already indicated that in another 30 days or thereabout, we would be ready again to put 200 homes on the market. From very modest beginning, our people have started to demonstrate that this is possible”, he said. According to the Governor, it was instructive to note that in some Estates there were less applicants than the homes that were available, resulting in a situation where in such places like Igbogbo where there were 20 homes available, only one applicant successfully met the condition and automatically became the winner. “In Ojokoro, there were 16 homes available; only three applicants met the prequalification conditions. So they were the automatic three that we had and those were already announced here. A similar thing happened in Odoragushin in Epe where there were 20 homes on offer but only three prequalified applicants and they were all successful”. “In Abijo Chois Gardens, there were 20 homes of two bedrooms available, only one applicant was successfully prequalified and he was the undoubted winner. In Agege, there were 11 homes on offer and there were 26 applicants, so a draw was inevitable and we have seen some of the winners who have been announced today”, he added. Fashola stated that from the records, Shitta seems to be the oversubscribed scheme thus indicating to the state Government that it must look at that area again and see if it can find more land to build more homes. He informed that the State Government has already awarded the housing scheme in Obele Oniwala which is not far from Shitta thus creating a prospect for those who were unsuccessful in Shitta to look forward towards Obele when completed. He stressed that from a modest beginning Nigerians have started to demonstrate that home ownership is possible but that it requires constant update of records of all financial transactions, payment of taxes while citizens must step up now to a more orderly sense of government, a more orderly way and process of homeownership and property acquisition. The Governor said this is the way it is in many parts of the world, adding that nothing less than the best is good for the people of Lagos and that those are the kind of standards the present administration will try to maintain and achieve. “Interestingly I am pleased to note that young people are already benefitting from the scheme, young people, young couple, and women seem to be leading the initiative, indicating clearly and asserting their independence towards home ownership and property ownership”. “We also kept our word that all of the homes on offer that were not subscribed at the last draw would be part of this draw. Those ones from last month and those ones that were not subscribed this month would be cumulated into next month’s draw which would give us more than 200 homes for next month”, he explained. Earlier, the Executive Secretary of the Lagos Mortgage Board, Mr Kodjo Sagoe had informed the audience that at the first draws, 18 people have successfully completed the financial closures and collected their keys thus becoming home owners. He said for the second draws, some of the schemes had more people applying than the number of flats available while in some schemes the number of applicants was less than the number of flats available.
