36 abducted Compostela Valley miners freed by NPA Lieutenant Colonel Michael Logico, the Philippine Armys 66th Infantry Battalion commander, revealed that 36 of the 39 abducted Compostela Valley gold prospectors were released on Sunday, May 4, after being used as human shields by about 80 New Peoples Army (NPA) rebels who were being pursued by two battalions of soldiers. Logico said the civilians were freed through the help of local officials. He added, though, that three of the gold prospectors were still being held in Sitio Tabon in Barangay Panamin, Mabini town. He also said that it is possible that more civilians from Panamin and the villages of Magcagong and Parasanon in the neighboring town of Maragusan who went to Tabon are also being held captive by the rebels. In a phone interview on Monday, May 5, Logico told ANC, We received reports that the enemy were in a position between the municipalities of Maragusan and Mabini. Medyo naipit sila (they got trapped). By ANC , 5 May 2014 On Saturday, May 3, NPA members reportedly abducted 39 miners, including four children, from a mining site in Compostela Valley to stop troops from advancing and capturing them. The Army said the rebels involved in the incident belong to the NPAs Guerilla Front 2 and Pulang Bagani Command 6.
