365 Days, 365 Songs II. Day 31: Birdland, Weather - TopicsExpress

365 Days, 365 Songs II. Day 31: Birdland, Weather Report Birdland was the opening track of the Weather Reports 1978 album HEAVY WEATHER. The song and the album marked bassist Jaco Pastoriuss first appearance as a full member of the group. Pianist/bandleader Joe Zawinul penned the composition as a tribute not only to the namesake club, but also as a tribute to the man for whom the club was named, Charlie Parker. The song is without a doubt the most famous Weather Report piece and has been covered by numerous groups, including the Manhattan Transfer in 1979. Jon Hendricks wrote lyrics for their version of the song, which features a bass synth and what sounds like a Yamaha CP-80. That rendition won the 1981 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Fusion Performance, Vocal or Instrumental. The Manhattan Transfer cover is included in the comments as a bonus track. youtu.be/Ae0nwSv6cTU
