53 Gazans died today. 1 Israeli soldier was seized by militants. Obama swiftly called it barbaric and proceeded to hold a press conference demanding the soliders unconditional release. Likewise, the [mostly western] press is screaming headlines about this since the morning, carrying the soliders (may he live long) picture in a white shirt and a wide, affable smile. A solider on duty, not a civilian. A solider engaged in war in Gaza and not holed up in his living room in Israel. One solider in the midst of disproportionate carnage. What more can I say? When the (anyways mythic) equality of death and suffering becomes so blatantly unequal in an already unequal world, I feel less afraid and worried about the time when the compromised liberalism of this world order – and the military and ideological scaffold of nation-states that support it – will slip into terminal decline.
