7 days, 7 Ted Talks on The Struggle of Mental Health. Day 1: Kevin Breel: Confessions of a Depressed Comic. Theres a pretty popular misconception that depression is just being sad when something in your life goes wrong; when you break up with your girlfriend, when you lose a loved one, when you dont get the job you wanted. But thats sadness. Thats a natural thing. Thats a natural human emotion. Real depression isnt being sad when something in your life goes wrong. Real depression is being sad when everything in your life is going right. - Kevin Breel. I spent a long time holding off seeking help because I had no reason to be sad all the time. Kevin puts real depression into words so well. Now looking back, I realise my lack of reason to be sad, is the very reason why I needed to and should have sought help. Dont wait until you have an explanation for why youre sad to ask for help. Youll spend way too long in your head, looking for reasons or problems to justify your emotions. Youll probably even create problems that were never there because its easier to do that than comprehend youre miserable for no reason. In reality, there is reason for you to be miserable, you may have wacky chemicals that need taming, or poor thought processes that need training or a range of other things that can trigger the onset of depression. Theres a fine line between the normal emotions of life and depression which needs to be acknowledged. If your moods are impacting your day to day life, its time to ask for help. If youre struggling, hang in there, better days will come. If youre watching someone struggle, avoid asking them whats wrong, just acknowledge their struggles and let them know you are there if they need anything. Bel xx
