70 years ago today, the German surprise Western Front assault on allied lines, called Wacht am Rhein, or “Watch on the Rhine”, began what the West would come to call The Battle of the Bulge, which went on from December 16, 1944 to January 25, 1945. Over that time, more than one million soldiers fought the battle: some 500,000 Americans, 600,000 Germans and 55,000 British. Allied victory came at a tremendous cost. About 19,000 U.S. soldiers died, and 47,500 were wounded and more than 23,000 missing. The British suffered 1,400 casualties with 200 killed. And the Germans had 100,000 soldiers killed, wounded or captured. Please pause to remember and offer thanks for the resolve of that generation of soldiers, sailors and airmen who fought with such tenacity that the world will never forget.
