9-260 — Control of Money Money Philippians 4:10-19 (POSB, note 2, point 3.) Do you control your money or does your money control you? Bill Hybles shares this personal story: When I left the family business to enter the ministry, I turned down a golden opportunity for affluence, I say that with no credit to myself. I felt Gods call so definitely that I simply could not refuse. For two years I ministered with no salary. Lynne (his wife) taught music lessons and we took in boarders to cover the rent. Then I began receiving thirty-five dollars a week, and later eighty-five. We were thrilled! Eventually our salary was set at twelve thousand dollars a year. I remember thinking, Who would ever want more than twelve thousand dollars a year? Soon I found the answer. Me. As the church grew and my job description enlarged, the board of directors periodically increased my salary. Each time I thought, Wow, this is far more than I need. Who would ever want more than this? Twelve months later, I would find out. Me. Finally, in a late night truth-telling session, I came to grips with an ugly reality. The more I had, the more I wanted. Id been believing the Money Monsters lie that just a little bit more would be enough. But when would the drive to accumulate stop? Lynne and I decided then and there to cap my salary. The board agreed to our request, and helped us strike a deadly blow to the Money Monster. Practical Illustrations - Practical Illustrations – Volume 9: Galatians-Colossians.
