9 random things about me: 1) I was born in Puerto Rico. My first language was Spanish and I even remember dreaming in Spanish. We eventually moved to Los Angeles and never really spoke it again. These days I only break out the Spanish in case of emergency. My accent is still there but my grammar is…creative. 2) At 10 years old I was an extra in the Van Halen “Hot for Teacher” video. I was supposed to be a high school student just hanging out before school. I didnt know any better so I guessed that HS students do cartwheels before school. When they said “action” that is what I did and ended up tearing my skirt all the way up the front showing my underwear. It had to be repaired by the wardrobe dept. and I felt both embarrassed and really special for the attention at the same time. 3) In real HS I didn’t fare much better at being “cool”. Everyone else was so popular and interesting and had known each other since they were like, sperm, so I really felt like I was on the outskirts the whole time despite meeting a lot of nice kids. I didn’t earn enough credits to graduate. The day the Class of 1992 graduated I watched from the audience. My heart was breaking as I watched. 4) I never wanted to feel that way again so after much work I graduated from college. With honors. 5) I have an unusually strong grip I like to call, “man hands”. I can carry a week worth of groceries out of the car in one trip and I have to open the front door with my foot. Oh yeah, I also have monkey feet. 6) I develop a funny speech impediment if I scrape my tongue with a plastic straw. It happens even if I just think of it. Its happening to me right now. I have a metal straw that I can use impediment-free and I would love to carry it around I just can’t commit to that level of weird. 7) I don’t get star-struck about actors, but I do about writers. When you read a writer’s story, you are looking into their soul, even if it’s a non-fiction story. This is intimacy, man! They are so brave that way. When I read a book really well written, I’m done for. Steinbeck, you kill me. I would love a book dedicated to me because holy shit- what an honor. 8) I got the chicken pox when I was 13 years old. My face got it the worst- I looked like a monster! On top of looking like a creature, I was also quarantined in a room. Can we say Hunchback of Notre Dame? The internet would have been nice in those days… 9) My general purpose in this life would be to know that somewhere to someone at some time, I made an impact. Theres no point of a life lived only for the good of myself.
