COIMBATORE: A 97-year-old woman underwent angioplasty at a hospital here with the doctors claiming her to be oldest women to have gone through such a procedure. The nonagenarian woman was attending to her activities on her own when she felt severe chest pain. She was admitted to the K G Hospital around 4pm yesterday by her neighbour, since her son was in Bangalore, a hospital official said today. Prompt team work and immediate care within the window period of three hours by the multi-speciality hospital saved the old womans life. A catheter was introduced into the heart and blockages were identified, hospital chairman, G Bhakthavatsalam, said in a release on Tuesday. The blocked portion of the artery was dilated by a balloon. After which drug eluting stent placed immediately following which the womans heart started pumping normally and she was relieved of her pain totally, he said. Post-angioplasty, the woman recognized the doctors, nurses and her relatives — six children, 11 grand children and 21 great grand children.
