A BIT OF JESUS EACH DAY- DAY 49 TEXT: MATTHEW 9: 14-17 NEW WINE IN NEW WINE SKINS I recall the days I wrote my BECE and SSCE, now WASSCE, exams. The invigilators stressed the need for us to read the instructions on the answer booklets. One of the important instructions was that we begin a new question on a fresh or new page and that we write the question number in the appropriate space. Reasons abound for why the examiners put this instruction on the booklet. Perhaps it aids in presenting a neat and orderly work. But I also think that it gives us that consciousness that we are on a new question that demands a different answer, a new methodology or approach from the previous question.. In today’s reading Jesus tell us that no one puts new wine in old wine skins. Like the answer booklet new wine demands new wine skin. What Jesus means is that you cannot claim to be renewed in mind and spirit by leading the old wrong paths. A new way of life is not evident in clinging to our old wrong habits. If we are renewed let us see a change in our lifestyle, a positive one of course. Reducing the occurrences of some bad habits we have is no substitute for a new way of life; we completely need a new way of living by totally abandoning our bad habits and taking on good ones.
