A BIT OF JESUS EACH DAY- DAY 78 TEXT MATTHEW 13:1-23 THE PARABLE OF THE SOWER- PART II (THE FIELD) According to F. L. Booth in The New testament, the Parables of Jesus, the common fields or land for farming in Palestine at the time of Jesus was divided into long narrow strips. There were no fences around these strips. What separated each strip were foot paths. As people walked along these paths they became hard and unsuitable for farming. In many of the areas the land consisted of outcroppings of bedrock, and the surface of this rocky terrain was covered with only a thin layer of soil. Ridding the ground of thorny weeds was a continual problem. If the roots escaped the plough or if the weeds had produced seeds, a new growth of thorny weeds was inevitable. This was the nature of the land in our text of the Parable of the Sower.
