A BIT OF JESUS EACH DAY- DAY 83 TEXT: MATTHEW 13: 24-30 THE PARABLE OF THE WHEAT AND WEEDS (PART I) The parable begins as thus: “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to…” The purpose of the parable is to describe some aspect of the Kingdom of Heaven. The difficulty with Matthew’s audience could probably be why good and evil should co-exist if the kingdom of heaven was really present with the coming of the Messiah. This parable thus addresses the issue of good and evil. By so doing this parable attempts to answer the questions: Who is responsible for evil? and What should be done about it? This parable like the parable of the sower involves the sowing of seeds. But this time both good and bad seeds are sown and found together in the same field. The parable narrates that only good seeds were sown but an enemy sneaked in to plant weeds among the good seeds. Interesting to note is the fact that the enemy’s deeds are not known until both plants begin to grow. It is like pregnancy, initially no one notices it until the tummy begins to protrude. The lesson is that both good and evil can grow. What matters is the ‘suitable soil’. “Little sins” which we might not consider harmful and unnoticed have the potential to ‘grow’ and get noticed. The same is true with goodness. To be continued…
