A Failed Empire again. Some of you may be wondering how Brezhnev ever got into power in 1965. Well its simple, but for Americans counter intuitive, escape your prejudices. The Politburo/Presidium had been taken over by peaceniks in around 1964 and they threw the brinksmanship loving Khrushchev out on his ass. THEY WERE SCARED SHITLESS! The Peace Lovers were in and stayed in until the end of the Soviet Union in 1991! The Twentieth Congress Party Boys of 1956 as they called themselves and are remembered by historians. Andropov too, Chernenko not so much, but still a lets not start a war guy, were the peaceniks. Meanwhile, think what was going on in our own DOMESTIC politics! Who really were the war mongering maniacs during the 60s, 70s and 80s in the world? But then in 1991, there was a revolution again and we could have backed the, 1. Peaceniks (Gorbachev), 2. or a drunken politician(Yeltsin), or lastly, 3. The raving Nationalists (Putin). The Russians love to do everything in threes (troikas). Who did we pick? And then in the 90s we starved Russia of cash, as a punishment really, while we were having the hottest economy since, ---when? The punishment part is sick, but if you search your mind for your feelings, or the USs mood at the time, yup, thats what we did, sent them to bed without their supper. We WON! We treated the Germans WAY better after WW II? What was the difference? In the intervening period had we really become that vindictive? Really, really, smart. Good work! Happy now?
