A French diplomat met Washington in 1778, and wrote: I have never seen anyone who was more natually and spontaneously polite. For the next 58 days, I will post one of the 110 epigrams that 14-year-old George Washington compiled into his little guide called Rules of Civility and Decent Behavior in Company and Conversation. In his younger days he was very ambitious and not quite as filled out with vision and character. George is the examplar of the effective lifelong learner. That said, the very last one - No. 110 - gives intimations of immortality. Today we present No. 52. Why did he do this? His father died when he was eleven and he had to grow up fast:
