A LITTLE LESS ACTION When I was a teenager living in Terang my friends and I would often drive after work on Fridays to Warrnambool. Our first visit was usually the Action gym, then followed by Kermonds or Chinese food from the 88 restaurant. That was back around 1980 and here in 2014 I’m still a member of Action…but sadly not for much longer. I’ve had a few years away from the area and have probably joined or tried every other gym that opened up in town…but still I would gravitate back to Action. About two years ago the four other guys in my weightlifting group decided that they had had enough of the lack of update and maintenance on the Action gym equipment, and the restrictive opening hours. So I am now a member of Anytime fitness and while I enjoy that gym’s modern equipment and 24-hour opening, I retained my membership at Action. I know that might sound silly but there was some logic to it as Action also has fitness classes and a pool and sauna that I enjoy. Recently I have been spending more time at Action, mainly as the token male in fitness classes trying to lose some weight and defy the ravages of time. I have also had session in the gym where I can work up a decent sweat on a hot day (on most days I prefer the ceiling fans to the over-controlled air-conditioning of other gyms) I have always felt comfortable in the Action gym. I met some great friends there, had a lot of fun times, and achieved my best weightlifting there (300 pounds on the bench press). The gym was past its prime but the staff were welcoming and the variety of functions meant that it had a little bit for everyone. it still felt like a second home. I was talking to one member this week and she said that Action attracted down-to-earth people. I think that is why I liked it. You don’t see many Mercedes in the car park. Now Action is going – apparently if published rumours are true to make way for a new CFA station – and a big part of my life is ending. I will miss it. If you would like to have a little more conversation about a little less action (apologies to Elvis for confusing his lyric), please feel free to comment.
