A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH: HENRY BROWN Known in Taranaki as the grandfather of Inglewood, Henry Brown was born in 1842 at Burton Pedwardine, Lincolnshire, and was he first child of Henry Handley and Sophia Wilhemina (need Morris) Brown. On November 6, 1858 the family sailed for New Zealand aboard the ship Eclipse, arriving on March 3, 1859. In 1863 Brown began milling timber on the 810-hectare property his father had purchased in upper Carrington Rd, processing timber brought to the mill by nearby settlers. An Inglewood sawmill was established 12 years later, and handled the large felled timber from the massive Moa Block on which the settlement of Inglewood was established. Running 24 hours a day, it changed Inglewood’s appearance from a few scattered shacks dotted amongst the bush in 1874 to a new settlement within a year. The dense virgin bush at the time was regarded as some of the most heavily-wooded country in Taranaki. Henry Brown died in 1921 at his Rata St home in Inglewood, aged 79, and is buried at the Inglewood cemetery. (Writer: Graeme Duckett, Taranaki Daily News, 22/11/14, p16)
