A Man Celebrated his Birthday by giving this stranger the shock of a Lifetime - A very lucky waiter in Upstate New York received the surprise of the lifetime when a man celebrating his birthday left a shockingly generous tip – and also offered a wonderful life lesson. Server Michael Shafts at The Ginger Man in Albany, NY was shocked when the gratuity line on the patron’s receipt read $1,000, along with the message “Pay it forward. My birthday present to me”. The man had been dining with his wife, who told Shafts on their way out that her husband had done something very nice for him. “I shook his hand, I hugged him twice, and said it was too much, twice!” Shafts told the Albany Times Union. “He insisted, twice, that he wanted to do it, that it was legitimate. Instead of waiting around to pay it forward, Shafts got right to it. He divided more than half of the money up with both front-of-house and back-of-house staff members that had been working with him that night. The restaurant’s manager said that Shafts is hardworking and the decision to share his big tip with the rest of the staff was not out of character. “He’s honestly a great guy and it couldn’t have happened to a better person,” the manager told Times Union.
