His second innings of 160 (following his 4 wickets on the third day), was a real gem. For someone of ‘tender years’, his batting epitomised fortitude, intelligence, style and vitality. Commentators were keen to remark on the captain’s ‘match awareness’ during Sri Lanka’s performance. The young skipper praised veterans Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara, for whom the match “almost certainly represented a triumphant Test swansong on English soil”. Undoubtedly Matthews ‘cricket exploits serve as an inspiration to young and matured sports enthusiasts.
