A Renewed Call.. Some ninety days into our current administration’s tenure, I originated a post on RCFJ forum that called for the National Security Minister to be relieved of portfolio. Inherently, the most important responsibility of any Government is to ensure the safety and security of its citizens. . I suggested at the time, that the Hon Gentleman should do so voluntarily, or be asked to do so by his boss. I did so because there was no downward trajectory in the crime rates in Jamaica some three months into his tenure. Needless to say the reactions to my call were swift and yes, you guessed it…. broken down along party lines. Many of my friends and colleagues on this forum thought that the Minister simply had not had sufficient time to “turn things around”.. Still others ,suggested that the Police High Command aught to be the ones held accountable for Jamaica’s dire crime situation.. So, here we are some two years in and there is no measurable improvement in the crime rate. We have sought solace in such things as year over year crime statistic comparisons, to tears, to calls for divine intervention.. The fact of the matter is crime is on a downward trajectory in many cities and many countries around the globe. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for our beloved country.. I believe that public service is a noble and worthy calling and that those who offer up themselves for such service should be commended.. However, not every good teacher can be a good school principal, not every good doctor can be a great neurosurgeon and not every good banker and be a great National Security Minister.. Once again, without fear or malice, I urge a change in the leadership of Jamaica’s national security apparatus, starting at the top.. We simply cannot, continue with business as usual.. This, my fellow Jamaicans, is bigger, much bigger than personality, or group, or party.. A secure nation is paramount for this generation and for the well being our children and our children’s children! @evertonrbailey.
