A Rwandese and Sudanese were yesterday charged with having worked ivory. Nyilimana Carine and Ajong Ajang were allegedly found with nine worked ivory bangles worth Sh60,000 on September 27 at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. The court heard that Carine was from Sydney via Dubai and was heading to Rwanda when she was found wearing four ivory bangles on her wrist. Ajang was from South Sudan when she was intercepted at the screening point and found with five bangles. The airport officers informed the KWS officials who went and allegedly verified that the bangles were worked ivory. The two, however, denied the charges before Makadara chief magistrate Emily Ominde. They told the court that they were not aware that it was illegal to have the bangles. Ajang pleaded with the court for lenient bond terms, saying her mother is admitted to the Kenyatta National Hospital and she had travelled from South Sudan to see her. Ominde released them on Sh300,000 bond each. The case will be mentioned on October 13.
