~A Strange Missionary~ I have an acquaintance who invariably differs from the others in his opinion on any issue. One may as well say that he is a person who opposes for the sake of opposition alone. Even if you say An apple a day keeps the doctor away, he would raise objection to it. I was curious to know what prompted him to take this line of eternal opposition. So I put to him point blank, once, Why are you the scapegoat to every universal view? His reply astounded me to the utmost. He said, Do you know-in the whole history of mankind, as well as from your near-about-half-a-centurys life experience- of a sole instance of anyone being converted to his opponents opinion through argument? Obviously NOT. Its clear then that I have no motive to convince anyone in favour of my view. I said, What other motive could you have, pray? He said, Just the opposite. To pose a challenge before him so that he defends heart and soul his own stand. In the process, he gets thoroughly convinced in his own opinion and stands firm on his ground. Is this not a SERVICE to humanity I have been offering- one of the best and most needed?
