A Sunday in North Scott County Yesterday presented a great opportunity for an afternoon drive. The weather could not have been more agreeable. My goal was to visit all seven North Scott schools and the multiple communities that they serve. Tyler Bindrum, my campaign manager and I completed that goal barely in time for a Sunday evening BBQ at home with family. The first leg of our journey took us to the town of Maysville followed by both Dixon and Donahue with a stop at John Glenn Elementary. From John Glenn Elementary we headed to Long Grove and Alan Shepard Elementary; lots of construction going on with the expansion project and complete revamp of the school’s street entry. We then headed to Park View and visited Neil Armstrong Elementary before heading to the town of McCausland. Once in McCausland we were ready for a quick break and enjoyed a drink and appetizer at the Lucky Frog. From there we went to Princeton and toured the Virgil Grissom Elementary School grounds. While in Princeton we also took a quick look inside Go Fish, which recently changed ownership, and we were on our way again. To complete our tour we visited the School District Administrative and Transportation Operations sites on Iowa Street in Eldridge. Finally we finished our journey with a drive-by of all three School facilities in Eldridge, Ed White Elementary together with North Scott Junior and Senior High School campuses. With eighty miles under our belt we had been to all seven schools and the district offices. In total the North Scott Community School District covers 220 square miles; we saw a significant portion of those 220 square miles yesterday. Our School District encompasses a unique blend of both rural and semi rural communities and surroundings. Elsewhere I’ve seen and heard the North Scott School District described as “rural and metropolitan”. Given the view of the many square miles we visited yesterday, I conclude metropolitan we definitely are not! We have many communities that all have educational needs supported by a historically great School District. How well our kids are educated and how our communities grow in the future has a lot to do with how our School District plans for that future… that plan needs a longer term and more balanced view! To do that we need to approach the September 10th, 2013 School Board elections focused on the overall make up of the next North Scott School Board. Requirements include: Balanced representation, Balanced experiences and Balanced perspectives within each member Please - Vote on September 10th, 2013… everyone’s vote counts even yours!
