A TRIBUTE TO LEGENDARY MUSIC DIRECTOR OF INDIAN CINEMA...MADAN MOHAN JI..... Film: Dastak (1970) Vocals: Madan Mohan Lyrics: Mujrooh Sultanpuri Music: Madan Mohan Composition: Malgunji Bageshri Unga (Mixture of Bageshri & Khamaaj) The National Award for DASTAK (1970), was one of the few official recognition that Madan Mohan Ji ever received in his 25 year career. Thus, this film would be a special landmark in his repertoire. The song was originally sung by Lata Mangeshkar in the film. As Lata Di, on the day of the recording, was unwell, Madan Ji decided to do a dummy recording in his voice just for reference. This had happened earlier in the case of Naina Barse, and possibly some more songs, but the dummy recordings were never retained, except on random spool transfers, which were reused / erased. Thus various such recordings have been lost. Raga Malgunji is one of the lesser known Ragas, but it has a beautiful melodic structure and belongs to Khamaaj Thaat. It is considered to have shades of three Ragas Bageshri, Jayjayvanti and Rageshri. Still it has a melodic personality distinct from these three Ragas. The Raga contains S, R,g and G,M, P, D, n and N. The Raga is sung by Bageshri Unga. M and S are recommended as Vadi and Samvadi notes, respectively and the traditionally followed time for presentation is third quadrant of night i.e. 1 a.m. to 4 a.m.
