A big picture view. No more wind farms should be built until we see evidence that they have a meaningful impact on CO2. The SEAI report launched last week tells us that 2,000 MW of wind which cost €4 billion, is saving us only 2% on total CO2 emissions per year. Their calculation is wrong as they exclude back up cycling plant (spinning reserve) which can quarter this claimed saving. When spinning reserve is included, the CO2 and fuel saving moves to a paltry 0.5% or a €30.5 million of the €6,000 million we spend on fuel imports each year. So the question is: If wind energy does not work, why are we putting them anywhere ?. Most politicians do not want the hear or have to act on these facts as it would mean providing leadership and putting themselves in the firing line.
