A donor conference hosted by Egypt, the PA and Norway in Cairo that was attended by 90 countries and international organization to rebuild the Gaza Strip after Israel’s war on Gaza ended surpassing the $4 Billion initially sought by the PA- Qatar pledged $1 Billion, the EU pledged $570 million, Saudi Arabia pledged $500 million, the US $ 212 million, the UAE $200 million, Norway $95 Million, Germany $63 million, France $50.5 Million, and Britain $32 Million. The international community pledged $5.4 Billion to rebuild Gaza, $1.4 Billion more than requested by the PA. Nonetheless, there is widespread concern that any help to Gaza will eventually be lost in the recurring cyclical violence- where in the last six years Gazans have suffered three Israeli wars that destroyed Gaza, and killed, maimed and injured thousands, and again rendered homeless more than 60,000 Palestinians. This concern was echoed by Qatari Foreign Minister Khalid bin Mohammed al-Attiyah, in announcing his countrys pledge. While he denounced the international silence that surrounded Gazas destruction he said he hoped these pledges will not be destroyed much like many of the development projects that the international community has contributed to in the past- monies that were spent on electrical grids, water projects, hospitals, schools, building homes and factories that were destroyed time and again. Al-Attiyah also said, While the Palestinian people need financial support, they need more political support from the international community. A just peace is the only real guarantee for not destroying what we are about to rebuild and reconstruct.
