A few great ladies in class yesterday asked me about eating before - TopicsExpress

A few great ladies in class yesterday asked me about eating before bed and timing of carb intake. I will try to be brief. First of all, watch the sugars in all yogurt. I have had many clients buy Greek yogurt thinking it is healthier. In the beginning it was. However, the single serving sizes are now being loaded with sugars. chobani/products/non-fat-blueberry/ A cup (8oz) of canned (packed in water) pineapple has 18 grams of sugar. Chobani (6oz) with pineapple has 18! Yikes! A wiser before bed (60 minutes...if you are hungry) choice would be 6oz of Dannon Light & Fit Greek with a few fruit pieces and a tbsp. of extra protein powder. This will put a little clean wood in your fireplace (metabolism) as well as keep the recovery process going after tough training. 1% cottage cheese with A LITTLE fruit is o.k. as well. Eating close to bedtime is o.k. It is not the timing so much as the quality and quantity of what you eat. Another big tip is to not consume starchy carbs after 3pm if you go to bed anytime before 11. Starches are calorie dense (full of energy). If you tend to slow down your activity level after 3 you do not want to consume a lot of starchy carbs after that. Even if you go to afternoon / evening training this is a great tip. You should consume these carbs (oatmeal, sweet potatoes, brown rice, whole wheat pasta, quinoa, bulgur, couscous, beans, lentils, etc) earlier in the day. The body will store the glycogen in the starchy food in your muscles and liver to release during the day and evening to fuel your activities. The lower your glycogen levels during exercise the more your body will have to release stored calories / fuel (bodyfat) to use as energy. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask questions.
