A few people came to the planning meeting on Thursday, and we came - TopicsExpress

A few people came to the planning meeting on Thursday, and we came up with some presentation ideas for this and next semester. Nicholas Istre (me): - What to know before your first programming (or IT) job. - ownCloud and other open source replacements for Dropbox and Google Drive - git and hg: Using version control in your projects - Introduction to Arduino (alternate title: first steps towards building your own robots for world domination) Demian Neidetcher: - Java 8 features - Scala, Intro and idiom - DevOps, or 4 Things You Should do for All Outgoing Calls Mike Feher: - node.js - NoSQLs vs traditional Relational Databases - Kids foundry (or making your own aluminum pickaxes from old harddrives?) Now these are mainly in the idea stage, nothing is yet set in stone, and likely not all of the topics will be presented. Ill probably start with the What to know before your first programing job topic when I reach out to the UL faculty about getting presentation rooms available for the August meeting. If anybody else have any presentation ideas theyd like to do, or if you wish to help with the topics above, feel free to comment here or send message to me or other possible presenters above. In addition, Joe Abraham has a proposal about running weekend labs where, as an example, we teach Middle and High-school students on building their own system and installing a linux distro on it. Other labs can continue on from there on training on using other open-source tools to create stuff (using Krita or Gimp to make your own graphics, getting started with Blender, etc.). Anybody interested in this please contact me. Ill be posting more later on topics like building a new website for the group, and for getting comments my first presentation topic idea.
