A few weeks ago, I had no words. Now I have some. This morning I heard someone on NPR say that the vast majority of police officers are effective professionals who endeavor and sacrifice to make their respective communities safer places to be. If I stipulate thats the case, then I am then forced to inquire: why are such vast numbers of effective professionals not OUTRAGED by the laspes/failures/crimes of their peers who are not equally committed to law, order, and MORALITY? Such stipulations are thus unnecessary. The lack of outrage on the part of the vast majority, itself, is outrageous, and demonstrates a deep systemic problem perpetuated and complicated by ongoing racism, injustice, and tolerance of policing that is neither effective nor professional. Of course there are outliers. I count some police officers as friends, and I trust in their character, morality, and professionalism. But I am not in a position where they, or any officer, doubt my intentions or motives just because of how I look or where I live. Until we can achieve circumstances where the most compromised among us can feel trust in those entrusted to protect ALL, we are all truly in some deep shit. If our police are not accountable to the same standards as the rest of us, how can we EVER truly trust them?
