A few words from our pal Mark Orton about his contribution to this months song, The Beautiful Blur. Be sure to like and follow Marks page to keep up on all the tremendous projects hes got going on! -------- I was thrilled to be asked by my old pals over at Rabbit Rabbit Radio for a contribution to their song. Long time listener, first time strummer. And I’ve been playing more guitar than usual these days as several of my last bunch of film scores have been guitar-based. My score for Italian director Carlo Mazzacurati’s latest film “La Sedia della Felicità” had me venturing into spaghetti western territory as well as exploring quasi-medieval chorales with a great boy soprano. My eBro (dobro played with an ebow) also figured heavily as one of the soundtrack’s textural elements – the ebow lends that instrument a number of timbres usually reserved for musical saws and pedal steel guitars. The opening chorale of this tune is based on one of the cues from “La Sedia” – and I won’t pretend that Ennio Morricone wasn’t channeled throughout. Also – It wouldn’t be fair if I didn’t mention the fact that despite my years working as an engineer with some of the greatest living guitarists (Bill Frisell, Mark Ribot, Dave Tronzo, etc), my recent trip to Spirit Mountain Casino to see what’s left of the band Yes has had a bigger impact on me both musically and in terms of a basic fitness regimen. Steve Howe was probably my biggest early influence on guitar – in my roiling pre-pubesence, at my most vulnerable to men wearing capes and to the blasting of pre-show Stravinsky in an arena, my older brother took me to see them (this is back in the prog-rock glory days of the late 70′s) and I was instantly hooked. Madison-Square-Garden, Spirit-Mountain-Casino is not. But seeing Steve after all these years up there all yoga trim and capeless (and sounding amazing playing all of Close to the Edge and Fragile) was at the same time an inspirational and cautionary tale, as all great guitar playing should be. Blame my wanton noodling with Rabbit Rabbit on that. And thanks Carla, Matthias, and Jon for bringing this tune to its present songdom!
