A final thought for tonight: Lets be clear that a big part of what the Staten Island and Ferguson killings (and those similar to them) are all about is police officers entitlement not only to authority, but entitlement to any amount of ridiculous escalation to protect their own personal feelings about that authority being challenged. This is why I have a sour taste in my mouth when public figures extol the bravery of police officers as a class of people. Sure theyre brave, in an ideal sense. But real bravery? Real bravery in this case is not best measured by willingness to expose oneself to danger, but by willingness to back the eff down and put the public good ahead of your entitlement to feel powerful. Youre so brave? Deal with being challenged without resorting to excessive force. Or better yet, dont react to being challenged at all. We pay you and confer authority on you to protect us and our rights under the law. We do not pay you to protect your feelings. Especially not when your actions to getting your feelings hurt violate our rights and take our lives.
