A huge wooden cross stands like a beacon in the grassy area of our church parking lot. A metal casing surrounds the wood at the bottom, holding the cross firmly in the ground and preventing rot. Passing by one Sunday, I saw a handful of grass blades growing tall between the restrictive, prison-like casing and the cross. The blades pushed up at least ten inches higher than the other grass. Why? Because they found a safe place between their restrictions and the cross. We often find ourselves pushing back against the limitations in our lives. They can be anything from restricted job mobility to confining relationships to the difficulty of choosing righteousness. “Just set me free to live better (or easier)!” we cry. But those restrictions frequently stand immovable, driving us back instead, back toward the cross. Back to the safest place there is to thrive. The cross is where Christ chose to surrender instead of asserting himself. The cross is where God did miraculous things with Jesus’ submission. The cross is where we lay down our resentments about sacrifice, and pick up the resurrection. God desires to do greater things than we can imagine or accomplish on our own, and our frustrating limitations drive us toward surrender. There, God grows us tall and keeps us from rotting in self-reliance. From the screening room, Melinda Ledman linkd.in/XvJBQn
