A lengthy but impassioned argument. Neil Gaiman points out that literacy is more important than ever before as society verbally communicates less and relies heavily on technological forms of communication. He argues that reading - and even more so that reading fiction - is vital for mental, emotional, and psychological development. Fostering the imagination evokes empathy, encourages perspective, instills hope and courage. Reading throughout life, but most importantly throughout childhood, equips us with necessary life skills such as coping, problem solving, and overcoming because we learn from books that our world can be different, that our future can be better, and that, perhaps most importantly, the power to change these things lies within each of us.
