A little review on how the whole body approach works (saddle fit, teeth, diet, musculoskeletal balance, core stability etc) and the importance of patience to allow the body to readjust and strengthen….. Pernod is 17year old, TB X mare that had evented to BE100, sustained injury and retired from BE by owner in 2012. She was brought back to soundness and put on loan 2013. The extents of her injuries are unknown but told mild arthritis in front pastern joints (history of weaving) and her limbs have number of scars and windgalls. She rode with an elevated head carriage and tendency to head nod and snatch reins at trot. She was sound but also when jumping, noticeably dropped one foreleg (pic 1). She also had a compromised digestion, very very loose dung. She was very tense through shoulder musculature and had limited stretch flexibility of her back and less range of motion through limbs than expected. Pernod has enjoyed regular McTimoney treatments to help correct and maintain skeletal alignment, had her saddle re-stuffed (came with pony and fitted but very hard one side, soft other), teeth checked, incorporates stretch exercises and lots of core stability exercises into her weekly routine to better support her limbs. Her diet was optimised with high forage diet, mineral vitamin balancer, pre & probiotics and joint supplement. After 1 month she stopped ‘nodding’ and limb symmetry much improved (pic 2), after 6 months she excelled at pony club camp (pic 3) and started producing perfect droppings!!!
