A message from MSAD 35 MAINE June 10, 2013 Dear Members of the Marshwood Community, The district needs your help and support! In preparing next year’s budget, the district experienced unanticipated losses in both state revenue and new costs totaling ($929,000) which included: the curtailment of state funds, the assumption of the state’s share for teacher pension costs and a 13% increase in our health insurance costs and as a result of these dynamics, our work is not over! Tomorrow the citizens of Eliot and South Berwick will consider the district budget validation referendum. Currently, Maine has a two-step process for approving the district’s school budget. In the first step, voters must approve the amounts of the various warrant articles at the annual District Budget Meeting [ours was held on May 29ththis year.] Secondly, citizens must vote to approve the total overall budget during the budget validation referendum, which will be held tomorrow, June 11th. This year, in addition to considering the budget validation referendum, there is also another question to consider. Every three years, the state of Maine asks voters to also consider the actual process for approving a school district’s annual budget and 2013 is one of those years. Therefore, in addition to the question regarding the district budget validation referendum, voters will be asked whether they favor keeping the two-step process for approving the local school budget i.e. at a District Budget Meeting and through a separate validation referendum or moving to a one step District Budget Meeting approval process. Please vote during the budget validation process. The official budget validation vote will take place tomorrow, Tuesday, June 11th. Eliot residents may vote from 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. at MMS. South Berwick residents may vote from 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. at the South Berwick Town Hall. Thank you! Sincerely, Mary Nash, Ph.D. Superintendent of Schools
