A motor neurone disease (MND) sufferer has told the BBC that legalising assisted suicide would place sick people under increased pressure to end their lives prematurely. Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast, Michael said that he would not contemplate assisted suicide if his condition worsened, but that he felt under pressure to do so from people asking him several times a week whether he would consider it. He said: It makes one feel like I should be contemplating it for sake of the health service or my family watching what Im going through. Meanwhile ITV have aired criticism of Coronation Streets rose-tinted depiction of an assisted suicide shown on this weeks episode. Dr. Peter Saunders said the episode misrepresented the issues and gave credence to dangerous myths such as that pain caused by cancer cannot be controlled and that effective pain relief causes confusion and loss of identity, implying that the best option is suicide. He said that having managed many dying patients, the suggestion that assisted suicide is the best option is simply untrue.
