A necessary Wake-up Call by Sen. Eghes: There are many things - TopicsExpress

A necessary Wake-up Call by Sen. Eghes: There are many things which happen in Nigeria that most Nigerians take for granted. We are a people severely battered over many decades by successive governments at all levels by the military and politicians across all political parties. We have become cynical. We do not expect any good thing to come out or our country. Even when we achieve something significant, many of us still manage to find a reason why our success was a fluke and so not repeatable. Pessimism has become a badge of some sort of perverted patriotism. Nigeria has been declared Ebola-free by the World Health Organisation. Yes; the plague of the Ebola Virus Disease has been contained by Nigeria and by Nigerians even when more cases and deaths are being reported in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. I congratulate President Goodluck Jonathan, Gov. Babatunde Fashola, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu (the Minister of Health, Dr. Jide Idris (the Lagos State Commissioner of Health) and all the medical personnel who made this possible. While we mourn those who died needlessly because a Patrick Sawyer decided he would be a Purveyor of Death, we should be grateful for the survivors. Yet we cannot relax. As long as Ebola Virus Disease exists anywhere in Africa, we are still at risk since our people travel frequently and our country has become the new preferred destination for business in the continent. We have learnt vital lessons: we can defeat any enemy (even Ebola Virus Disease! ) when we put aside partisan and other interests to confront a common enemy. We can also defeat Boko Haram. We can defeat corruption. We can build a nation where truth, justice, equity, prosperity and genuine unity reign. God bless Nigeria. Abasi odounk obio nigeria !
