A new giraffe for the Bongani Mabaso Ecopark Sasol introduced - TopicsExpress

A new giraffe for the Bongani Mabaso Ecopark Sasol introduced two giraffes into the Bongani Mabaso Ecopark in 2011 for enhanced species diversity and thus improved bio-diversity management. The introduction of the giraffes was successful and the two giraffes adapted well to their new environment. An unfortunate incident occurred in September 2014 where the giraffe bull died as a result of a dysfunctional rumen. The giraffe cow was left alone in the reserve. This was seen as an unsustainable way forward and a decision was taken to replace the giraffe. This will again restore the planned species diversity in the reserve. A new giraffe bull arrived at the Bongani Mabaso Ecopark today, 19 December 2014 to enable nature lovers to continue to view giraffes in an environment that is suitable for them and also easily accessible to the community. The reserve is also home to various other mammal species, such as zebra, eland, gemsbok and impala to name a few, which are managed in the same way. Similarly, when there are too many of a species in the reserve according to the management plan, the numbers are brought down again. The reserve also offers excellent birding experiences with 124 confirmed sightings. The reserve will be closed as from today, 19 December 2014 until Friday, 9 January 2015 to allow the new resident to adapt to his environment. Be sure to visit the Bongani Mabaso Ecopark often during 2015 to see how the giraffes are doing.
