A number of our clients have discussed the possibility of feeding raw diets to their pets. This is not something that we recommend, for several reasons. For one, raw diets have been repeatedly shown NOT to meet the daily requirements for all nutrients needed by your pets. This is especially a problem in cats, who have a limited ability to synthesize certain vitamins, amino acids and fatty acids from their food. Lack of these nutrients can lead to blindness, neurological disease and heart failure. The other problem with raw diets is that many of them have been shown to carry harmful strains of E.coli and Salmonella, which can be infectious to your pets and to you. This is especially a problem if anyone in the household is immune suppressed (children, the elderly, people on chemo, pregnant women, and those with compromised immune systems). They can pick up these bacteria directly from the food or from your pets as they shed them. Be safe and use a cooked and well tested diet. Give us a call if you need any recommendations--were happy to help!
