A parent needs your help with her 5yo and opening birthday gifts. - TopicsExpress

A parent needs your help with her 5yo and opening birthday gifts. Please provide gentle peaceful advice that’s respectful toward parents, children and each other - free of shame, blame and punishment (no time out, taking toys away, or other punitive measures). We’re not always able to admin these, so we rely on you to keep them peaceful. Thanks! My son has his 5th birthday coming up and I am really worried he will act ungrateful when opening presents. He is into a certain thing (airplanes) and that is really all he cares about. At his school Christmas party he opened something that wasnt an airplane and threw it down. He had never acted this way previously. Weve always opened presents at his parties (but we certainly dont have to). Ive talked with him about it and he says he wants to open gifts at his party and will be grateful for each gift even if its not what he wants. I plan to practice opening presents a few weeks before his party to help talk about how to react and show gratitude. Is there anything else I can do?
